Summary of the March 4-7, 2010 Spring Board Meeting

The National Council for Agricultural Education met in Alexandria, VA on March 4-7, 2010. A majority of the board's time was spent finishing The Council's strategic plan. The Council has identified five goals in which to focus.
-
Goal 1: Create a sustainable revenue stream for The Council's operations.

Goal 2: Establish an effective brand communication strategy for Agricultural Educ.

Goal 3: Promote seamless education pathways leading to current aned emerging
-
careers in Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources.

Goal 4: Implement a strategy that makes Agricultural Education more relevant.

Goal 5: Define a process for surfacing critical issues and offering ideas and solutions,
-
generating input, setting direction and sharing with the profession
-
Additional highlights included listening to updates on the planning for the 2011 Summit in Orlando, Florida; a report on the Electronic Record Keeping taskforce; and a presentation on energy in agriculture and Agricultural Education's role in preparing students for college/career readiness in the field of energy.
The Council also formed a National Planning Committee for Experiential Learning. The objectives of the committee are listed below.

1. Bring all organizations together to create a definition of experiential.

2. Identify the educational merits of experiential learning.

3. Add SAE to the college-ready/career-ready conversations.

4. Identify strategies that will help get SAE implemented by teachers.

5. Answer the question, "What does the construct of experiential learning contribute
-
to learning?"

6. Identify resources that exist to make SAE happen?
Problem Statement: To identify the problem statement, objectives, timeline and budget for national taskforce to study experiential learning.
Summary of the October 8-9, 2009 Fall Council Board Meeting

The Council:

Adopted The Council Strategic Plan for 2010-2015 which includes new vision and mission statements (see Council Strategic Plan webpage)

Approved the development of The AFNR Cluster Lead Advisory Committee which includes representatives from Education, Government, Associations and Industry. The Cluster Lead Advisory Committee will be engaged in discussions regarding AFNR Career Cluster pathways including Ag Biotechnology

Moved to use Council funds to pay two outstanding invoices with PLTW
-
Moved to partner with education, industry, government, and non-profits to develop strategies to engage students and instructors at all levels in the ‘wide world of agriculture’. Nancy Trivette, Franci Phelan, Jay Olson, Lloyd Bell and Mel Dewsnup will serve on the global engagement committee. The Council will host a dialogue with industry and education on October 23rd at the Omni in Indianapolis to connect agricultural education to global agriculture, food and hunger. Keynote speaker will be The Honorable Catherine A. Bertini.

Moved to utilize the Annual Agricultural Education/FFA Annual Report system to collect and report teacher demand information

Adopted revised Bylaws and adopted revised Administrative Policy Handbook

Moved to adopt the terminology "Strategies for Quality and Growth in Agricultural Education" in lieu of "10x15" terminology

Moved to support objectives in USDA grant (operated by NFFA) that reflect the development of standards for electronic record books in agricultural education

Election of 2010 Executive Committee- Steve Gratz, President; Ray Nash, President-Elect; Exec Com Members- Cheryl Zimmerman, Jay Olson and Lloyd Bell

Connecting Agricultural Education to Global Issues
The Council will host A Dialogue on Global Agriculture, Food and Hunger (by invitation) on Friday, October 23, 2009, from 8:30 - 11:00 am at the Omni Hotel, Indianapolis, Indiana. The Honorable Catherine A. Bertini, Professor, Syracuse University, 2003 World Food Prize Laureate and former Executive Director of the U.N. World Food Programme will keynote the session. The purpose of the session is to open a dialogue about global agriculture and food issues. The dialogue will be used to identify critical components of, and develop strategies for, the incorporation of global agriculture into agricultural education at the secondary and post secondary levels, thus better preparing our students for future careers. The dialogue will lay the foundation for future collaboration among education institutions, business and industry, non profits and others interested in global agriculture, food, and hunger issues.

2011 Agricultural Education Summit
Dr. Ed Osborne, Professor and Chair of the Department of Agricultural Education, University of Florida will Chair the next National Agricultural Education Summit planned for March 2-4, 2011 at the Rosen Centre, Orlando, FL. State travel stipends will continue to support state team travel to the Summit. Check back here for specific details about the Summit.
